What is Medical Insurance?

Medical insurance is a type of insurance that you take up, in order for medical expenses to be covered in the event that you need medical care and attention. The benefit of having medical insurance is that it allows you to take care of your health without worrying about the medical cost. Medical insurance does not offer the same benefits as a medical aid and is not a substitute for it. However, medical insurance is a worthwhile option if you cannot afford medical aid.

What is the difference between Medical Aid and Medical Insurance?

Medical Aid covers a large list of expenses including hospital visits, treatments and medicine. These costs are covered based on the rules of the Medical Aid and the Medical Aid plan type you have. Medical Insurance is a tool that gives you access to private healthcare for day-to-day medical needs, at an affordable price. The costs of a plan are based on the number of benefits available, including limits and exclusions. Medical Insurance is not a Medical Aid and the cover is not the same as that of a Medical Aid.

What are the main differences between the MyHealth Core and MyHealth Plus Plans?

The main difference between the two plans is the type of coverage you receive from your plan. The MyHealth Plus plan for example, is more robust and comprehensive in its coverage, offering Unlimited access to doctors, and specialist visits including Paediatricians, Gynaecologists and more. The MyHealth Plus plan also offers Chronic Medication for 27 conditions, as opposed to 7 on MyHealth Core. Review our convenient plan tables on the MyHealth Core and MyHealth Plus pages for an overview of what each plan covers and reach out to a broker consultant who can help you make the right decision.

What does an Standard Accident Plan cover?

Standard Accident Cover Plans are designed to cover you in the case of a medical emergency due to an accident. This means that if you are in an accident, you will get the emergency help you need, this includes access to casualty for stabilisation.

In the event of hospitalisation, the insured party is covered for up to R380,000 per event, or R1,500,000 per event if you choose the Standard Extended Accident Cover option. Annual limits also apply.

This cover includes and Medical Emergency Illness Buy-Up that gives you access to Casualty and In-Hospital treatments in the case of a Medical Emergency due to a defined list of 13 conditions:

  • Aortic aneurism
  • Acute appendicitis – (swollen appendix)
  • Acute asthma attack / allergic reaction
  • Acute inflammation of gall bladder
  • Acute pancreatitis – swollen pancreas
  • Acute renal (kidney) failure
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome
  • Acute respiratory failure
  • Dehydration
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Fit or seizure
  • Kidney stones
  • Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in lungs)

Can I insure other people?

Yes, you can. We have made it easy for you look after family or home assistance staff when it comes to their health. Access to private healthcare is something that can positively change the lives of anyone who supports you at home or someone you care for. You can do all this from just R15 a day for an adult and R11 a day per child.

How much is Medical Insurance?

The cost of medical insurance is determined by the type of insurance plan you are on, and the number of dependents attached to the plan. Our medical insurance plans start from as little as R469 per month for Day-to-Day Cover for the principal policyholder, with child dependents at R329 per month. You can choose to combine any covers together and there is a saving if you combine Day-to-Day Cover with Standard Accident Cover, which is the most popular cover type. For example if you take the MyHealth Plus Day-to-Day Cover with Standard Accident Cover, it’s R664 per month for Adults, and R433 per month for Children.
